Hole In 1 Golf, a specialist golf shop on Lord Street in Southport, has become a hub for international visitors during The 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. The shop, opened last year by married couple Lisa Richards, 51, and Glyn Richards, 50, has extended its opening hours until 8pm throughout the tournament week to cater to the influx of golf fans.
Surge in American Customers
Lisa Richards reported a significant number of American customers, with many needing last-minute equipment or local course recommendations. One American visitor purchased a range finder after cracking his lens en route. Lisa also helped several customers secure tee times at local courses, leveraging her local knowledge.
“It’s been mad. We knew we’d need to open later, so we’ve opened our doors until 8pm for the whole of the week,” Lisa told the ECHO. “We normally only have one person because it’s normally quiet, manageable. But, yeah, it’s been mental. We’ve had customers right up until half past seven when we’re closing all week. So far, so good for business. A lot of Americans.”
Celebrity Encounters
As a golf enthusiast, Lisa has enjoyed the tournament’s atmosphere. She spotted Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy outside her shop and managed a selfie and brief chat. “I’ve followed him from day one. I just think he’s a fabulous player and he’s so good with the public. He’s such a nice guy,” she said. Lisa also expressed support for local pro Tommy Fleetwood, hoping he wins the Claret Jug in his hometown.
The shop’s location, just over two miles from Royal Birkdale, has proven ideal for attracting the hundreds of thousands of attendees. Lisa noted that business has been brisk, with customers arriving until closing time each evening.
