Phil Foden signs new four-year contract at Man City

Phil Foden has signed a new contract at Manchester City, penning a four-year deal with the option of a further 12 months. The contract ties him to the Etihad until 2030 as the 26-year-old extends his stay with his boyhood club.

Foden's reaction

On signing his new deal, Foden said: “Committing my future to City means everything to me. Playing for this club is all I’ve ever wanted to do and it’s always an honour to wear the shirt.

“It’s not lost on me that I’ve been lucky enough to be part of a historic period with so many titles won, but we’re always looking to the future and trying to win more.

“I can only thank the club, staff, team-mates and fans who continue to put their faith in me and trust that I give everything I can for City and I hope I’ll be able to repay you for years to come.

“I can’t wait to work with Enzo again. He was brilliant during the Treble season – someone all the players respected and loved working with. To have him back here is exciting.

“Personally, I know I’ve improved so much from working with our coaches and world-class squad and as many of the legends who were here when I first broke through move on, I am excited for the next phase of my career at this great club.”

Director of Football's praise

Director of Football Hugo Viana added: “Everyone at Manchester City is incredibly proud of Phil. He represents everything good about our academy. He is a unique talent, and his creativity is a joy to watch.

“But none of what he has achieved would be possible without the focus, dedication and humility to work hard in every moment and absorb all of the knowledge available to him through our coaches and players.

“Given Phil joined City at the age of nine, his continued success is one that is celebrated in every corner of our club from the academy staff who helped develop him right through to the City fans who have backed him throughout.

“At 26, his development is still ongoing, and we look forward to seeing the player Phil can become over the coming years.”

Career and future

Foden came through the ranks at City and was instrumental in helping the Blues to their 2024 Premier League title triumph, a year in which he won Premier League Player of the Season and the PFA Players' Player of the Year.

He had a difficult 2024-25 campaign and while he found his feet in the first half of last season, his form tailed off and he struggled for regular City starts before missing out on a place in England's World Cup squad. City will hope that after a full summer off, Foden can hit the ground running in Enzo Maresca's debut campaign in charge.

Other contract news

The Blues are also understood to be close to agreeing a new contract with Josko Gvardiol, whose current deal runs until 2028. The defender, who was at the World Cup with Croatia, was the subject of transfer speculation earlier in the summer but is expected to commit his future to City with an extending deal.

Foden's previous contract was due to expire in 2027 and his new deal means that Rodri is the highest-profile player in the last 12 months of a contract at the Etihad. Mateo Kovacic, Jack Grealish and Marcus Bettinelli also see their deals expire next year.
