A well-known bar in Newcastle city centre is undergoing a transformation to become a new Mexican restaurant. The venue, previously home to Bar Bannatyne (also known as Bar B), is being converted into Tia's Mexican Cantina, a popular eatery that has already found success in Durham.
From Sports Bar to Mexican Cantina
For years, Bar Bannatyne was a favourite spot for sports fans, friends enjoying wine, and those looking to unwind after work. Located on the ground floor of The Gate, the bar was a key part of the complex's early days in the 2000s, alongside a cinema and Mood nightclub. It offered cocktail deals and screened major sporting events like the Grand National and Newcastle United matches. However, the bar has been closed for some time.
Now, the premises are being renovated to house Tia's Mexican Cantina, which will seat up to 150 diners. The restaurant promises a menu of classic Tex Mex dishes and a selection of celebrity tequilas.
Tia's Success in Durham
Tia's opened on Claypath in Durham and has become a staple of the local dining scene. After being taken over by Kaleido Ltd around a year ago, co-directors Steven Martin and Gabriel Petre have expanded the business. Steven Martin expressed excitement about the move to Newcastle, stating: “We are very excited about moving into The Gate. Tia’s in Durham has always been hugely popular and we thought the time was right to replicate that success in Newcastle and at The Gate.”
What to Expect
The menu will feature favourite Tex Mex dishes with some surprises. Inge Johnson-Mitchell, Centre Manager at The Gate, welcomed the new addition: “We are looking forward to welcoming Tia's Mexican Cantina to The Gate, and we know their vibrant mix of Mexican cuisine will be very well received. They will be an excellent addition to the centre, providing a range of favourite dishes – and not forgetting their famous frozen Margaritas – which will really enhance the variety of our offering.”
The renovation is currently underway, and an opening date is expected soon. Tia's Newcastle aims to bring the same vibrant atmosphere and flavours that made its Durham location a hit.
