A new artisan bakery is set to open in Monton, transforming a dilapidated industrial unit into a modern confectionary and coffee shop, despite fierce opposition from some neighbours.
Bakery Plans Approved
The plans for 59A Clifton Road will convert the former metal works into Monton Crumb Works, offering takeaway products and a modest dine-in area with seating for 36 customers across the ground floor and mezzanine level. The bakery’s opening hours are set from 7am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 8.30am to 4pm on weekends and bank holidays, including times when the shop is open to staff only for baking preparation.
Neighbour Concerns
However, not everyone welcomed the idea. Mr Mann, who has lived next door since 1996, told a planning committee on June 11: “I just think a bakery in this area would cause a lot of issues with noise, pollution and extra traffic, with the number of visitors and deliveries, including early mornings. It will cause sleep disturbances for the neighbours, and I’ll also have constant smells of baked goods drifting into the houses.” He also highlighted existing parking problems due to high street access, predicting stress and friction among residents.
Another neighbour, Mrs Johnson, did not object to the business itself but expressed concerns about the refurbishment works. In total, the application received eight objections from members of the public.
Support for the Bakery
Mr Robert Hodgson, representing the applicants, argued the project would “bring investment and jobs into Salford and revamp a building that is currently well in need of TLC.” Councillors discussed Sunday opening hours and potential noise disturbance but ultimately found no legal planning reason to amend them, prompting an angry and sweary outburst from the public gallery.
The scheme was approved, and developers have three years to commence works.
