Marks & Spencer has introduced a £30 pair of satin trousers that offer the same stylish look as Zara's viral wide leg trousers, but without the risk of tripping. The Zara trousers, priced at £25.99, have gained notoriety online as 'death pants' after numerous wearers shared videos of falls and injuries, including broken wrists, grazed knees, and damaged phones.
The Problem with Zara's 'Death Pants'
The hazard stems from the exceptionally wide leg fit, which causes the trousers to wrap around the opposite foot or leg with each step, leading to trips. In contrast, M&S's Satin Drawstring Wide Leg Trousers feature a slightly narrower leg width, reducing the likelihood of accidents.
Features of the M&S Trousers
Made from silky satin material, the trousers have a relaxed, breezy fit perfect for summer. They include an adjustable drawstring elasticated waistband for comfort and are available in five neutral colors: black, chocolate brown, navy, and others. The high-rise waist and side pockets add practicality.
The trousers come in sizes six to 22 and offer multiple leg lengths—extra short, petite, regular, and tall—unlike the Zara version. This customization further minimizes tripping risks.
Styling Versatility
These trousers can be styled for various occasions: with a vest top and flip flops for holiday, heels and statement jewelry for date night, or an oversized shirt and ballet flats for the office. They are also suitable for autumn and winter when paired with oversized knits or sequin tops.
Customer Reviews
M&S shoppers have praised the trousers, giving them a five-star rating. One reviewer said: 'Amazing pants great for dressing up or casual pub date.' Another wrote: 'These are great, so comfortable, and the best thing is they don't crease or cling. The navy is a lovely dark shade, they look far more expensive than they cost.'
A third added: 'Lovely satin trousers. Really comfy and cool to wear. Plenty big enough. I'm 5ft. 6 ins and ordered a small/petite which fits perfectly. Would highly recommend.'
Some noted the length, with one shopper commenting: 'Beautiful navy satin drawstring trousers. Very comfortable and the fabric is soft and cool. I would normally get a regular length, but these are quite long, so you might want to try the short ones. I have also bought in black and chocolate brown as they are so fabulous.'
Alternative Options
Other brands have also released safer alternatives, such as Topshop's Satin Tie Waist Wide Leg Trouser, now on sale for £31.99, and Mango's Mariana Linen Mix Tailored Wide Leg Trousers for £49.99.
