A Morrisons Daily convenience store is coming to New Brighton, with the supermarket taking over the former Roberts Plumbing and Bathroom Supplies unit on Zig Zag Road in Wallasey.
The shop has been completely redesigned inside and out, adopting Morrisons' bright and modern branding. According to the supermarket, fresh food will be at the centre of the new convenience store.
Alcohol Licence Application
Morrisons has applied to Wirral Council for permission to sell alcohol at the premises between 7am and 11pm, seven days a week. A consultation on the application is currently open, allowing members of the public to submit representations before the council reaches a decision.
The consultation runs until Wednesday, August 12. After that, the application could be referred to the licensing committee for further consideration.
Caper Smart Trolley Trial
The New Brighton opening comes as Morrisons prepares to trial AI-powered shopping trolleys designed to make the supermarket experience quicker and more convenient. The supermarket has partnered with Instacart to introduce its Caper smart trolleys at its Preston store.
The trolleys automatically recognise products as shoppers place them inside, while fresh produce can also be weighed directly in the trolley. Customers can pack their shopping as they go, potentially making the checkout process faster. A touchscreen on the trolley keeps a running total of the basket, allowing shoppers to monitor spending and providing product recommendations based on their purchases.
Shoppers can scan their Morrisons More Card directly on the trolley to access loyalty discounts and promotions. Once finished, customers scan the barcode displayed on the trolley at a dedicated Caper checkout lane to pay.
Morrisons began rolling out the smart trolley trial on Tuesday, July 28, making it the first UK retailer to introduce Instacart's Caper technology. The initial trial is taking place in Preston as the supermarket assesses how customers respond to the new system.
