Plans to expand the popular Bridgend Designer Outlet have been submitted to the local council. The proposals, from McArthur Glen, include a 2,300-square-metre retail extension and a new deck car park at the site, which first opened in May 1998 and currently houses around 80 retailers, a cinema, and restaurants such as Nando's and Wagamama.
Expansion details
The expansion would take place at the southernmost end of the centre, over parts of an existing overflow car park, where there is a "lack of presence," according to the plans. It would create eight new shopping units along with a larger unit that could feature a mezzanine floor, plus landscaping, access improvements, and a raised parking deck.
The plans state: "The overall aspirations for the development are to create a high-quality, inviting, premium retail atmosphere consistent with the centre's positioning. Delivering a thoughtfully-designed retail extension at McArthur Glen Bridgend Designer Outlet that enhances the centre's commercial strength, architectural character, and long-term adaptability."
Public consultation
A consultation ahead of the submission received 23 responses. Concerns raised by the public included noise, loss of residential amenity, traffic issues, and increased litter. The applicant responded that the proposal represents a "modest" extension with no material changes to traffic volumes anticipated, and as there are no plans for additional food and beverage operators, littering is not expected to increase.
The plans will now be considered for approval by Bridgend County Borough Council's planning department.
