Mark Toney, the long-standing Newcastle ice cream institution, has closed for good after a 134-year history in the city. Both its Grainger Street and Percy Street branches have been shut for weeks, with a notice on the Percy Street window citing an 'electrical fault' for the prolonged closure.
A 134-year legacy in Newcastle
The business first opened in the Grainger Market in 1892, when Antonio Marcantonio brought Italian ice cream to Newcastle from a small mountain village near Rome. Over more than a century, it became a familiar name for generations of customers in the city.
Staff farewell message
Staff at the Percy Street branch announced the news in a statement on social media, saying: "To all our lovely customers, as we say goodbye, we just want to take a moment to thank every one of you for your support, kindness and loyalty."
ChronicleLive has contacted Mark Toney for comment but has yet to receive a response.
