Liverpool Yates pub closes for refurbishment until mid-August

Yates pub in Liverpool's Queen Square has closed its doors for several weeks while it undergoes refurbishment. The venue, operated by Stonegate, the UK's largest pub operator, left a note on the door informing customers: “Temporarily closed. Closed for a refurbishment. We are busy making some exciting improvements.”

Reopening date and background

The pub is scheduled to reopen on Wednesday, August 19. Yates, founded in 1884, is a familiar name on the British high street, known for its welcoming pubs and value-for-money dining. The Liverpool venue has been in Queen Square since 2016. The ECHO has reached out to Stonegate for further details on the refurbishment.

New restaurant arrival in Queen Square

The closure comes amid news of a new restaurant opening in the same area. Job adverts on recruitment website Indeed had listed a Queen Square address seeking “a hands-on general manager” for a tapas restaurant and cocktail bar, described as part of an independent company with several existing venues.

Queen Square has previously housed tapas restaurants. In 2021, Tapas Revolution opened a 132-seat venue with a Spanish-style terrace for over 100 outdoor diners, but it has since closed. Before that, the site was La Tasca, later rebranded as Tapas Revolution.

It has now been confirmed that the new arrival will be Elixir, a restaurant already established in Oxton Village, Wirral. In a video shared online, the team said: “Soon, this square will be booming. We're going to bring this square back to life and restore its vibrancy. There will be seating for more than 80 guests and it will feature the first Laurent-Perrier Champagne garden in the North West. Inside, there will be a baby grand piano, open windows, live entertainment and singers.”
