New Capital, a family-run restaurant in Liverpool's Chinatown, has closed for refurbishment. The restaurant, which has served the city for more than four decades, will reopen on Friday, August 21.
Closure and Reopening
In a social media update, the restaurant announced the brief hiatus, apologizing for any inconvenience. New Capital said: "We will be closed for refurbishment [and] reopening Friday, August 21. Sorry for any inconvenience caused."
Located on Nelson Street, New Capital has been a staple of the Chinatown area for over 40 years.
Celebrity Patronage
The restaurant is a firm favourite in the city and caught the attention of A-list Hollywood stars in May 2024. Actors Orlando Bloom, Elijah Wood, Billy Boyd, Sean Astin, and Dom Monaghan, known for their roles in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, were pictured inside the restaurant.
Dom Monaghan, who played Merry, shared a picture on Instagram of the reunion with Orlando Bloom, captioning it: "#squadgoals how’s yours? #becurious." The actors had spent the day meeting fans at Comic Con in the ACC Liverpool before dining at New Capital on the night of Saturday, May 4.
Future Plans
Last year, a planning application was submitted to Liverpool City Council to revive the neighbouring The Nook premises and create apartments on the upper floors of the restaurant. The Nook became famous worldwide during the city's maritime heyday.
A document in the application stated: "The proposed use of the buildings is proposed to be mixed use, with residential, restaurant and commercial components." The New Capital restaurant will be retained on the ground and first floor, with a Class E commercial unit proposed in The Nook's basement, accessible via an improved external staircase. The plans have not yet progressed.
