Lidl £9 Jumper vs £145 White Company and £104 Boden

Lidl is launching an Esmara Ladies' Chunky Knit Jumper for £8.99 this Sunday (November 1), positioning it as a budget-friendly alternative to premium versions from The White Company and Boden.

The jumper, part of the supermarket's Special Buy deals, comes in beige, grey, pink and brown, with sizes ranging from small to large. Lidl describes the design as featuring a "Norwegian-style jacquard pattern" with "raglan sleeves", and notes it is made with Lycra "for a superior fit". The material composition is 73% acrylic, 21% polyester, 4% wool and 2% elastane.

Comparison with The White Company

The White Company sells its Fair Isle Funnel-Neck Jumper with Alpaca for £145, which shares a similar aesthetic with Lidl's beige version. The White Company's product description says: "Our beloved, funnel-neck jumper is ideal for cosy, Christmas events – now updated with two beautiful Fair Isle patterns to choose from. It’s knitted with an alpaca-cotton blend that’s been brushed for an extra fluffy feel. Finished with classic rib trims."

Both jumpers feature a classic Fair Isle-style pattern across the shoulders and yoke, capturing a traditional, festive look. However, they differ significantly in pricing, construction and fabric quality. The Lidl jumper is an ultra-budget option made primarily from a synthetic blend, while The White Company's version uses a brushed alpaca-wool-and-cotton blend designed for softness and warmth.

Comparison with Boden

Lidl's jumper also serves as a budget alternative to Boden's Chunky Fair Isle Jumper, which retails at £139. Boden's description states: "Crafted from a mix of wool, cotton and alpaca, this crew neck, drop shoulder relaxed style is cosy and comfortable. The full cuffed sleeves elevate it to a true keeper, and you’ll love the array of modern Fair Isle prints."

Both jumpers share a similar crew neckline and relaxed fit, but the price gap reflects their fabric differences. The Boden jumper uses a blend of 40% polyamide, 35% RWS-certified wool, 15% cotton and 10% RAS-certified alpaca, whereas the Lidl version is almost entirely synthetic.

Shoppers must decide between an affordable seasonal look and the premium softness of natural materials, with the Lidl jumper offering a fraction of the cost of its higher-end counterparts.
