A Harley Davidson owned by Newcastle United legend Kevin Keegan has sold at auction just two days after his death. The 1990 Harley-Davidson Sportster sold for more than £35,000 at the H&H Classics auction on Wednesday, July 22, at the National Motorcycle Museum in Solihull.
Part of the proceeds from the auctioneers' profits will be donated to Cancer Research UK. The bike, described as an eye-catching tribute to Keegan's time at NUFC, was offered at no reserve, five months after he asked H&H Classics to sell the bike.
Fierce bidding for the bike
Auctioneers say the bike was subject to fierce bidding, showing admiration and respect for the football legend. Mike Davis, senior motorcycle specialist at H&H Classics, said: "It was a privilege for H&H Classics to auction Kevin Keegan's Harley-Davidson, and you could feel the passion from the bidders who were keen to show their appreciation for one of this country’s greatest ever footballers."
"Indeed, the winning bidder, an American-domiciled British businessman, flew a representative in from the States to attend the sale in person rather than risk any technological hiccups with a phone or internet bid."
Mourning continues at St James' Park
The football world has been in mourning since Kevin Keegan's family announced his death on Monday, nowhere more so than Newcastle. In the following days, the south west corner of St James' Park has become a shrine to the beloved figure, who played for the club and managed twice.
Newcastle's home campaign for the new Premier League season will kick off against another of King Kev's former clubs, Liverpool, with Wor Flags planning a tribute.
