Betty Beans, a much-loved independent gift and card shop on Kilmarnock Road in Shawlands, Glasgow, will close its doors for the final time on August 2 after 15 years in business. The owners said it had become too difficult to keep the business going in the current climate.
Family-run shop sells cards, gifts and home décor
The family-run shop has been a familiar part of the local high street, selling greeting cards, stationery, candles, home décor, jewellery, scarves and seasonal gifts.
Owners announce closure on Facebook
Announcing the news on Facebook, the owners said: "Hello lovely FB friends. We hoped it wouldn't come to this but the time has come to say goodbye." The statement continued: "We'll be shutting our doors for the last time on Sunday, August 2. We're super sad about it but it's just become too difficult to keep going in the current climate."
Thank you to customers and sale details
They added: "A big thank you to all our lovely regulars and to everyone who has ever bought a card, candle or Christmas dec from us over the past 15 years. We've loved being part of this community and we'll miss it." The owners announced a sale with 25% off all purchases and a Christmas in July area with 75% off Christmas items.
Customers express sadness and support
The closure prompted an outpouring of support from loyal customers. One person wrote: "So sad to hear this! Love your shop and always find something special. Wishing you all the very best and will be sure to visit over next couple weeks." Another said: "This is so sad, we have to get back to the shops or we will loose them all." A third commented: "So very sad when you told me this today. Wishing you both the very best it was always lovely coming into your shop and having a nice chat and a laugh." Someone else wrote: "Aww really sad news. My favourite local shop for all the birthday cards, wee gifts and Christmas decorations. It must be so hard to keep a small business running. Wishing you all the best." A fifth person added: "Heartbreaking news! Betty Beans is a truly delightful shop and will be sorely missed!!"
The shop’s final day of trading will be on August 2.
