Co-op has become the first UK supermarket to stock the viral New York dot cakes, offering them at £2.50 each in two flavours.
First UK supermarket to stock dot cakes
The colourful 'cake in a cup' went viral earlier this year after a New York bakery built a large following for its eye-catching cakes with crunchy tops and fluffy layered sponge. The cakes have since attracted millions of fans online, with many attempting their own DIY versions at home.
TikToker Cissy Jones spotted the dot cakes in Co-op, saying: "You heard it here first." In a taste test, she made sure to get all layers of the cake on one spoon, describing it as her "type of cake" before tucking in. She noted the cakes looked layered, delicious and not dry at all.
Reaction and flavours
Social media users said the cakes looked "unreal" and that they "need" to try them, with others saying they were "running" to their "local Co-Op" to pick some up. Jones shared that the cakes cost £2.50 each, adding that she reckons they are well worth the money because they are so tasty.
A dot cake typically features a layered sponge cake base and a completely flat buttercream top, covered in crunchy multi-coloured sprinkles known as 'dots'. These dots are ideal for satisfying ASMR-style videos when scraped with a spoon, helping to fuel the trend online.
Co-op's Raspberry & Vanilla Dot Cake combines vanilla-flavour sponge, layered with raspberry jam and vanilla-flavour frosting, topped with multi-coloured sugar decorations. A chocolate version, the Chocolate & Salted Caramel Dot Cake, features a fluffy chocolate-flavour sponge, layered with salted caramel and chocolate-caramel flavour frosting, finished with white and milk chocolate crispy balls.
