Asda has issued an urgent recall for three camera and phone bags after tests found they contain excessive levels of phthalates, which may pose a potential health risk. The UK supermarket is urging customers who bought the items to return them for a full refund.
The bags do not meet the requirements of the REACH Regulations, according to the retailer. Phthalates are chemical compounds used to make plastic softer and more flexible, but certain types, including Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), are subject to regulatory restrictions because prolonged exposure above specified limits may pose potential health risks and possibly cause damage to the reproductive system.
Which items are affected
The recall covers three products that were on sale for between £8 and £12.50:
- Burgundy quilted nylon camera bag – article number 1100258923, barcode number 5059206287215
- Zebra nylon phone bag – article number 1100258936, barcode number 5059206286553
- Brown quilted nylon camera bag – article number 1100264721, barcode number 5059206962396
How to get a refund
Anyone who purchased one of the bags is being urged to return it to their local Asda store, where they will receive a full refund. A receipt is not required.
An Asda spokesperson said: "At the time of shipment, this product successfully passed all required tests. However, subsequent testing has identified that it may contain phthalates at levels exceeding the permitted regulatory limit. Certain phthalates, including Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), are subject to regulatory restrictions because prolonged exposure above specified limits may pose potential health risks and possibly cause damage to the reproductive system."
The spokesperson added: "While no safety incidents have been reported, we're taking this action to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and to maintain our commitment to consumer safety. The product doesn't meet the requirements of the REACH Regulations."
