Asda is set to close its 11,000 sq ft store in Hale Barns, Altrincham, on Friday, July 31, just two years after it opened. The supermarket confirmed the closure in May, thanking the local community for their support.
Waitrose to take over
Waitrose will take over the site this autumn, though an exact opening date has not been confirmed. Waitrose regional manager David Donovan said: “Opening in Hale Barns is an exciting opportunity for Waitrose and we’ll offer the very best products and customer service for food lovers in the area.”
Neighbourhood store model
The premium retailer is rolling out ‘neighbourhood stores’ across suburban areas and commuter towns. These stores will span about 7,000 square feet and stock around 6,500 products, with larger bakeries and a focus on fresh food. A branch recently opened at Chelmer Village Retail Park in Essex, stocking over 6,500 products. The new stores are part of Waitrose's £1bn multi-year investment programme, which includes refurbishments, new openings, and other upgrades.
Customers are advised that the nearest Asda supermarkets are in Altrincham and Wythenshawe, a 15-minute and 10-minute drive away respectively.
