Aldi has been named the UK's cheapest supermarket for a full year, according to consumer magazine Which?, with a typical October basket of goods costing £154.34.
The discount retailer beat its nearest rival Lidl by £2.83, even when a loyalty card discount was applied to the latter's prices. The finding comes from Which?'s monthly analysis, which tracks the price of 87 popular grocery items across the major supermarket chains.
Aldi has now recorded 12 monthly wins in a row for the 'cheapest supermarket' title, meaning it has held the top spot for one year based on a typical basket of goods in Which?'s comparisons.
How Aldi compares to rivals
Aldi highlighted that even after loyalty discounts were applied, shoppers would still have paid £27.43 more at Tesco in October (priced £181.77) and £28.56 more at Sainsbury's (priced £182.90).
Morrisons was found to be £32.43 more expensive at £186.77, while Waitrose was calculated to be £61.53 more at £215.87. Aldi noted that the achievement marks the continuation of its winning run in 2026, having topped the Which? rankings for a whole year.
Festive savings highlighted
Aldi claimed the £61.53 price difference between itself and Waitrose is enough to cover a festive haul worth £60.59. It pointed to a range of products that can be bought with that amount, including its 12 Days of Lacura Advent Calendar (£19.99) and Wood Holiday Icon Candle (£12.99, 910g), Baron Amarillo Cava Brut (£5.59, 75cl), Gingerbread Mulled Wine (£3.49, 75cl) and Ravini Amaretto (£8.79, 70cl), its Specially Selected All Butter Mince Pies (£1.75, six-pack) and Specially Selected 24-Month Matured Christmas Pudding (£7.99, 800g).
Julie Ashfield, Chief Commercial Officer at Aldi UK, said: “We are thrilled to be crowned the UK’s cheapest supermarket for a full year.
“We know that the festive season can be an expensive time of year, which is why so many families are starting their preparations early to help spread the cost.
“As we head into the Christmas festivities, we are proud to be able to deliver standout quality at affordable prices and help our customers save towards making this time of year extra special.”
