Aldi has been dethroned as the UK’s cheapest supermarket, with Lidl taking the top spot for the first time in three months, according to Which? analysis for October 2025. The consumer group found that a standard shop of 70 items costs £120 at Lidl, compared to £121 at Aldi.
It marks the second time in 22 months that Lidl has surpassed its German rival, having previously claimed the title in July 2025. Aldi had consistently been the most affordable supermarket for the entirety of 2024 and topped the list in nearly 92% of months over the past two years.
Beyond the budget chains, Asda, Tesco, and Morrisons ranked as the next cheapest options. Meanwhile, a comparable shop at Waitrose was £43 more expensive than Lidl. In a separate analysis of 187 branded products, Asda came out as the most affordable when using loyalty cards, followed by Tesco and Morrisons.
The price rankings come amid industry concerns over rising costs. In late October, retail bosses including Aldi executives wrote to Chancellor Rachel Reeves warning that higher business rates on properties over £500,000 could force supermarkets to pass costs onto customers, potentially prolonging high food inflation into 2026.
