Wes Streeting's appointment as Defence Secretary caught many off guard, including this author. Two main concerns stand out.
Thin Experience
Briefings from those around Streeting aimed at bolstering his defence credentials only highlighted how limited his experience is. Claims that he is fit to lead the Ministry of Defence because he once visited the Falkland Islands and participated in a debate were described as laughable.
Political Favour, Not Merit
The appointment appears driven more by repaying political favours than selecting the best candidate. Reports suggest Rachel Reeves was initially offered the role, and a well-placed source indicated that Yvette Cooper turned it down before Streeting was approached. Defence should not be used as political currency.
One Reason It Could Be a Masterstroke
Despite the scepticism, Streeting is ambitious, a big character, and holds influence in government and the wider party. These qualities could help the MOD rearm and build capability. While someone like Al Carns would have deep military understanding, he would lack Streeting's government experience and influence.
Backed by John Healey as Chancellor, Streeting might prove successful. The author hopes so.
