MP Yasmin Qureshi has demanded answers from Salford Council after it approved a house of multiple occupation (HMO) in Walkden despite 100 objections from neighbours. The decision, made on Thursday, July 16, has sparked 'real anger' among residents on Mesne Lea Road.
Details of the Approved HMO
The application was submitted by Heath Waterhouse, who runs a travel agency firm, to convert a former family home in Worsley into an eight-person rental property. The proposed layout includes five en-suite bedrooms and a shared kitchen on the ground floor, with three additional en-suites on the first floor. An existing outbuilding will be used for storage and cycle parking, while the garage will become a communal laundry room.
Neighbourhood Opposition
In 100 objection letters, neighbours raised concerns about traffic, parking, and the property's proximity to a local primary school. They argued that a 'growing number of HMOs is changing the area's character' and that such a development is 'incompatible' with the family-oriented neighbourhood.
Council's Rationale
Council officers recommended approval, stating the HMO was 'unlikely to have a significant impact on local highways' and that the school building 'is set back by a significant distance and would not be impacted.' The planning committee ultimately approved the application with conditions.
MP's Response
Local MP Yasmin Qureshi condemned the decision, saying: 'This decision has caused real anger and anxiety among residents on Mesne Lea Road, and I share their concerns. One hundred objections is a clear sign that this development was not right for this location, particularly given its proximity to a primary school used by hundreds of families every single day.' She added: 'I do not believe the impact on highway safety was properly considered, and I will not let this rest now that permission has been granted. I have written to the Council to demand answers on how children’s safety will be protected, and I will keep pressing until residents get the reassurance they deserve.'
Local Councillors' Opposition
Local councillors Ivan Voronov and Hilaria Asumu also opposed the change of use. Coun Voronov described the approval as 'outrageous,' stating that local people's concerns were not enough to block the plans.
