Manchester City have confirmed they have lodged an appeal after being found guilty of breaching the Premier League’s financial regulations. The eight-time Premier League champions were found guilty by an independent commission of 114 of the 115 charges they were accused of.
The verdict saw them found guilty of all charges related to serious breaches of the top-flight's financial rules over a nine-season period between 2009 and 2018, and the majority of charges in relation to the club's failure to co-operate with the League’s investigation.
Club statement on appeal
The Premier League released a statement earlier this week confirming the verdict and revealing that the independent commission will hold a further hearing to address the issue of sanctions. However, Man City have always maintained their innocence, and issued a statement of their own in response to the Premier League as they declared they were ‘disappointed and surprised by the opinion of the Premier League Commission’.
Signalling their intention to appeal earlier this week, the club have now confirmed in an official club statement that they lodged their appeal on Thursday night as they continue to challenge the verdict.
It read: “Manchester City Football Club can confirm that at 7pm on Thursday 1st October 2026 the Club lodged its comprehensive Appeal against the opinion of the Premier League Commission, in relation to the Premier League disciplinary matter.
“The Club’s firm position is that, on multiple grounds, the opinion contains clear material errors, of law, principle and fact and is unsafe.
“The Club is innocent of the accusations made by the Premier League and a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence exists in support of all of its positions, relating to this case.
“We will continue to respect due process and are necessarily restricted in what we can say further until all proceedings are complete.”
Next steps for City
Man City will return to Premier League action for the first time since the guilty verdict against them was made public when they travel to Liverpool - the side that have been their leading challengers at the top of English football for the majority of the past decade - on Sunday 11 October.
