EasyJet customers travelling in groups could benefit from a lesser-known luggage rule. A passenger recently discovered the policy after taking to social media to ask about an upcoming booking.
Posting on X, the passenger asked whether they could transfer their checked luggage to another passenger in their group. In response, a member of the airline's social media team explained luggage is associated with the booking, not specific passengers. As such, any passenger on their original booking could use the checked bags they had purchased, and they did not need to make any amendments to their trip.
Social Media Exchange Reveals the Policy
In the exchange, a customer named Haig wrote: "How do you change the checked luggage to another passenger? Could someone contact me please."
A team member replied: "Hi Haig, thank you for reaching out. I understand you wish to change the checked luggage to another passenger. Checked luggage is not associated with specific passengers but rather with the booking. Therefore, any passenger on the booking can use the checked bags purchased for that booking. However, if you wish to transfer the checked luggage to a passenger on a different booking, that is not permitted. In that case, checked luggage would need to be purchased for the other booking. Please note that once purchased, the bags are non-refundable. Thanks, Chelsea."
Follow-Up Question Clarifies Usage
Sharing a follow-up question, Haig continued: "That’s great thank you Chelsea. So on my return flight home as one passenger did not travel with us I’ll ask for the checked luggage to be under my name?"
Chelsea replied: "Yes, that is correct."
The tip could be helpful for any passengers with a similar dilemma. Customers with questions about cabin or hold luggage can find more information on easyJet's website. The airline explains that passengers on the same booking can 'pool' the weight allowance for their hold luggage.
Weight Pooling and Baggage Rules
According to easyJet, each customer can bring up to three hold bags. Passengers can select a 15kg or 23kg hold bag, then more weight can be added in 3kg increments. But no single bag can be more than 32kg.
The online guide says: "If you’re travelling with family or friends on the same flight and booking, you can pool your total weight allowance. This means the total weight allowance can be split among the total number of bags booked, as long as no single item weighs more than 32kg. Maximum total size (length + width + height) = under 275cm. Please note that you cannot pool weight between hold bags and sports equipment."
