Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has suggested that cutting inheritance tax would be “morally right” as the party’s conference gets underway in Birmingham today.
Asked whether she planned to abolish the levy, which is paid on most estates worth more than £325,000, Badenoch told the Sunday Times: “It is morally right that people don’t get taxed twice. It is morally right that if you work hard and want to give something to your children the Government doesn’t take it away.”
Fiscal responsibility stressed
Badenoch later added: “I am not going to announce tax cuts unless we can show how we pay for them… tax cuts are a good thing but you’ve got to be fiscally responsible.”
The comments signal she is open to changes to the inheritance tax levy, but only if they can be funded sustainably.
Conference underway
The Conservative Party conference in Birmingham officially begins today, with Badenoch’s remarks setting the tone for the event.
