Harry Horrigan, 27, and his partner Oliver purchased a one-bedroom flat in Brentford for £390,000 in September 2025. They received a £12,000 contribution from the Fairview deposit scheme to help with moving costs and furnishings. The couple, originally from Middlesbrough, moved from a rented flat in Wembley to find a stronger sense of community.
Why They Chose Brentford
The couple were drawn to the area because of its creative atmosphere. 'There are a lot of creatives here, and you can definitely feel that in the area,' Harry said. 'There are independent shops, and a lot of artists and young professionals.' Local highlights include an Everyman cinema a three-minute walk away, which they visit at least twice a week with an unlimited membership.
Financial Details
The deposit was £30,000, saved partly through a Help to Buy ISA since 2019. The monthly mortgage payment is around £1,750, with bills adding £400-£500. Harry found the mortgage process challenging due to his freelance work, but it was completed within a month. 'I was just about to sign a contract for a full-time job, but I didn’t know if I was definitely going to get it, so they were a bit cautious,' he explained.
Making the Flat Their Own
The couple have personalised the flat with wallpaper, paint, and quirky furnishings. 'We’ve wallpapered the bedroom and pretty much painted every single wall in different light shades,' Harry said. Their style is maximalist and colourful, inspired by brands like House of Happy. The bedroom is his favourite room, featuring an expensive meadow-patterned wallpaper that he finds calming.
Advice for First-Time Buyers
Harry encourages others to explore schemes that provide financial help. 'It’s a bit more affordable than you’d think. There are lots of schemes out there where they’ll give you some money if you sign for it,' he said. The couple plans to stay for at least five to eight years, as the location is ideal for Harry's central London job and Oliver's work-from-home setup.
