A property tucked away off a road leading to the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park is currently operating as a hotel, bar and events venue, but it began life as a private house. The Grade II listed building, dating back to 1801, is for sale with a guide price of £215,000.
History and industrial past
The property is intrinsically linked to the area's industrial past and the development of the nearby Union Ironworks, which were established in 1800. The house was built as the home for the ironworks manager. According to Cadw, in 1803 the majority share was taken by the Crawshays of Cyfarthfa, Benjamin Hall and Watkin George. The works passed in 1810 to Benjamin Hall, and in 1837 the sites were amalgamated to form the Rhymney Iron Company.
The house is also the site of a little known uprising by 'The Scotch Cattle', disgruntled workers who attacked the property with blackened faces, draped in skins and wearing horned head-dresses, rebelling against working conditions. The manager at the time, Richard Johnson, witnessed the attack. The 'herds' are said to have come from Rhymney, Sirhowy, Tredegar and Dowlais, according to Cadw.
Current accommodation and potential
James Hollingsworth, of Paul Fosh Auctions, said: "The hotel currently provides extensive accommodation including nine or ten ensuite bedrooms, dining room, lounge, main bar, snug/second bar, commercial kitchen, function room and substantial rotunda conservatory." He added: "Externally, the property benefits from extensive parking, gardens, lawned areas and outdoor seating, providing considerable outside space."
Hollingsworth noted: "Rhymney House Hotel offers an attractive opportunity to continue its existing hospitality use or explore its residential development potential. Subject to the necessary planning enquiries, consents and applications, there may be potential to convert the property back into a substantial residential dwelling or potentially create a scheme of self-contained apartments/flats."
