136 Homes Planned for Huyton on Former Church Land

Plans for a 136-home development on former church land in Huyton have moved forward after housebuilder Breck exchanged contracts with the Archdiocese of Liverpool. The 6.7-acre brownfield site, adjacent to St Dominic's Church on Southdean Road, was previously occupied by St Dominic's RC Primary School, which closed in 2011 and has remained unused since.

Housing Mix and Affordability

Developer Breck proposes a mix of one to four-bedroom affordable homes, one and two-bedroom apartments, and open space. The properties would be split into 63 houses, 36 apartments, 26 maisonettes, and 11 bungalows. The local registered provider has suggested 110 affordable rent and 26 shared ownership properties, aiming to address local housing needs.

Planning Status and Timeline

The development is subject to planning permission from Knowsley Council, with a decision pending on application reference 25/00540/FUL, submitted in November 2025. If approved, construction is expected to start in spring 2027. A public consultation event will be held on July 16 at The Gate Community Centre from 2pm to 6pm for residents to share views.

Developer and Archdiocese Statements

Phil Dolan, managing director of the North West at Breck Homes, said: “This is an important brownfield site which has been unused for many years. We believe there is a real opportunity to bring it back into positive use for the benefit of the local community. Huyton, like many areas across the North West, needs more good quality affordable homes, and our aim is to create a place that provides these, improve a long-unused site and make a positive contribution to Huyton.”

A spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Liverpool added: “Following a rigorous selection process, we are confident that the land at the rear of St Dominic’s Church has been entrusted to a developer capable of delivering high quality affordable homes that will bring lasting benefits to the local community.”
