Rangers and Celtic supremos' net worths compared

The contrasting fortunes of Celtic and Rangers during the international break extend to the wealth of the men at the helm. While Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh is reportedly worth around £300m, Celtic's largest shareholder Dermot Desmond holds assets valued at $2.2bn (£1.7bn), according to Forbes.

Rangers chairman's reported fortune

Cavenagh's wealth largely stems from his role as co-founder and chairman of US pharmaceutical firm ParetoHealth, which has been valued at $6bn (£4.5bn) and is reportedly up for sale. His personal net worth is not widely known but is reported to be in the region of £300m - and could rise significantly if the sale goes through.

Cavenagh partnered with the investment firm of the San Francisco 49ers to acquire a controlling stake in Rangers. He has also worked in commercial banking and served on the board of the Self-Insurance Institute of America (SIIA).

ParetoHealth was co-founded with Andrew Clayton, while Mark Taber serves as managing director - both currently hold seats on the Rangers board.

Celtic owner's billions

Desmond began his career in Irish finance and first invested in Celtic in 1994, buying £4m worth of shares. He became the club's largest shareholder in 1999 when he bought out Fergus McCann, and now owns around 35 per cent of the club.

He made his fortune in banking, founding NCB Stockbrokers in 1981 before selling it for $39m in 1994. He then started his own private equity firm, International Investment & Underwriting, which has invested in Celtic, travel software firm Datalex, Mountain Province Diamonds and Barchester Healthcare.

According to Forbes, Desmond is the tenth richest Irish billionaire, with his wealth rising over the last 12 months.
