State pensioners will receive automatic payments of up to £300 under Andy Burnham’s government, as Winter Fuel Payments for 2026/27 roll out from November. The payments, worth between £100 and £300, are designed to help pensioner households with heating costs during colder months.
Eligibility and payment amounts
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) confirmed that anyone born before June 28, 1960, will receive a payment. Those living alone born before September 28, 1946, will get £300, while those born between September 28, 1946 and June 27, 1960, will receive £200. Recipients of Pension Credit, Universal Credit or Income-related ESA may receive different amounts.
Automatic payments and opt-out
The DWP will send letters from October confirming the amount, with money paid automatically in November and December. Pensioners with total income over £35,000 will have the payment reclaimed by HMRC. To avoid this, they can opt out by September 20, 2026 online or by calling the helpline before September 18, 2026. Opting out is a one-time choice unless they opt back in later.
