Bruno Fernandes Falls Short of Premier League Assist Record Despite FPL Credit

Bruno Fernandes was not officially credited with an assist for Benjamin Sesko's goal against Liverpool, meaning the Manchester United captain remains one assist shy of the Premier League single-season record held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.

Fernandes, who has 19 assists this season, headed the ball back across goal before Liverpool goalkeeper Freddie Woodman punched it onto striker Sesko, with the deflection taking it over the line. While Fantasy Premier League (FPL) awarded Fernandes the assist, the official Premier League rules do not count assists when a defending player touches the ball before the goalscorer.

The Premier League clarified that Sesko's goal stood after a VAR check for a possible handball. The VAR, Stuart Attwell, found no conclusive evidence that the ball struck Sesko's hand before crossing the line.

FPL rules were changed before this season to allow assists even if there is a single defensive touch, but the official record remains unchanged. Fernandes therefore remains on 19 assists, one behind Henry and De Bruyne's record of 20.
