Kepak Merthyr Plant to Cut Jobs in Restructuring

Kepak, a major meat processing company, has initiated a formal consultation process regarding proposed job cuts at its Merthyr Tydfil plant. The facility is the largest meat processing site in Wales.

Consultation Underway

The company confirmed it has launched a collective consultation with employees following a review of operations. Kepak cited evolving market conditions and declining herd numbers as reasons for the proposed changes.

Potential Redundancies

Reports indicate that 85 jobs may be affected, but Kepak has not confirmed a final figure. The company noted that the consultation is in early stages and potential losses could be up to 10% of the site's workforce.

In 2023, the Merthyr plant expanded its workforce by 150, bringing total employment to around 850. Kepak emphasized that the proposal is not linked to any loss of orders.

Company Statement

A Kepak spokesperson stated: "Kepak can confirm that it has commenced a formal collective consultation process with employees at its Merthyr site following a review of operations in response to evolving market conditions."

The spokesperson added: "Against a backdrop of declining herd numbers, the proposal is intended to ensure the site is configured to align with current and future demand, while supporting a more flexible and sustainable operating model."

Future Operations

Kepak remains committed to its long-term growth strategy, with Merthyr continuing to play an important role. The company has made substantial capital investments in the site and it will remain operational, sourcing and processing cattle and sheep from its established farmer supply base.

Kepak will maintain a significant presence in Merthyr as a major local employer and community member.
