HMRC has reaffirmed its long-term commitment to East Kilbride in a major jobs boost to the town. In 2024, HM Revenue and Customs renewed its lease at Queensway House until 2031. It has now been confirmed that Queensway House will continue to be the organisation’s base until 2047.
HMRC confirms 20-year lease
In a letter to South Lanarkshire Council and the town’s MP, Helen Pickles from HMRC said: “I am writing to you now to confirm that our current office at Queensway House will be our long-term base in East Kilbride.” She added: “Remaining and investing in Queensway House, with a refurbishment to make it fit for the future, best serves our business needs and secures the best value for taxpayers. It also ensures we maintain a strong presence in the town and provides long-term certainty for colleagues based there. We have committed to a 20-year lease that will commence in 2027.”
Part of wider Glasgow region
East Kilbride is part of the wider Glasgow region which includes the UK Government Hub and HMRC Regional Centre in 1 Atlantic Square, Glasgow, and a regional office at the Scottish Crime Campus in Gartcosh. Senior leaders in HMRC communicated this information to colleagues based in East Kilbride this week.
MP welcomes announcement
East Kilbride and Strathaven MP Joani Reid welcomed the news. She said: “I am delighted that HMRC have confirmed that East Kilbride will remain their long-term home by securing the future of Queensway House until 2047. The agreement provides certainty for the future of HMRC’s presence in East Kilbride and underpins plans for a significant investment in the building through a major refurbishment programme. The refurbishment will transform Queensway House into a modern, sustainable, and efficient workplace, ensuring it continues to meet the needs of HMRC colleagues and supports HMRC operations for the next 21 years.”
She added: “Since being elected in 2024, I have worked tirelessly to ensure that employers such as HMRC remain here in East Kilbride. This announcement not only reinforces East Kilbride’s standing as a key location for UK Government operations but highlights the UK Government’s commitment to delivering for the town and its communities.”
