Cardiff City have completed the signing of Krystian Bielik from West Bromwich Albion on a three-year contract, with the Poland international expected to address the club's defensive crisis and add depth in midfield.
The Bluebirds have agreed an undisclosed fee with West Brom for the 28-year-old, who becomes Cardiff's fourth first-team signing of the summer following the arrivals of Nathan Trott, Jack Moylan and Calum Scanlon.
Centre-back and midfield cover
Bielik is initially expected to help solve Cardiff's centre-back shortage, with the club lacking senior defensive options after a succession of injuries. However, his versatility could prove equally important further forward, as he is also capable of operating as a number six.
That gives manager Brian Barry-Murphy an alternative to Alex Robertson in the deeper midfield role, particularly with Eli King and Dakarai Mafico both poised to leave on loan.
Bielik said he remains comfortable playing in that position despite spending recent seasons predominantly at centre-back. "I've played the last couple of years as a centre-back and used to play a lot as a number six, a deeper midfielder, and I still feel comfortable in this role," he said.
Championship experience
The move takes Bielik to Wales with nearly 150 Championship appearances to his name, having spent much of his career in the second tier. He believes that experience can help Cardiff make an impact this season.
"I'm 28 years old now and have been in this league for quite a long time, so with this experience I know what it takes to win games home and away," he said. "I'm looking forward to start winning games and climbing up. It's the beginning of the season, so it can be a very successful one for us."
Bielik began his career at Legia Warsaw before being signed by Arsenal, although he did not make a first-team appearance for the Gunners. After loan spells at Birmingham City, Walsall and Charlton Athletic, he joined Derby County permanently and spent four years at Pride Park. He then spent four seasons with Birmingham City before joining West Brom in 2025.
Defensive injury crisis
Bielik made 17 Championship appearances for West Brom last season but struggled to establish himself as a regular starter. He was on the bench for the Baggies' opening two matches of this campaign, making a brief substitute appearance against Norwich City.
The signing comes at a crucial time for Barry-Murphy, whose defensive options have been severely depleted. Will Fish is expected to be out for around three months after surgery, while Dylan Lawlor has yet to feature this season and Callum Chambers has also been unavailable. Gabriel Osho has been working his way back from injury, and 15-year-old Noah Anyadike was forced into senior action during Tuesday night's Carabao Cup defeat to Norwich.
Bielik said he is already fit and ready to train with his new team-mates. "I'm very excited, I'm finally here and I couldn't be happier," he said. "I'm looking forward to starting with the team as soon as possible and focusing on the first game. I'm ready, fit and healthy, and can't wait to start with the team tomorrow and prepare for the big game on Saturday."
The Poland international has 11 senior caps for his country and has signed a contract with Cardiff running until the summer of 2029. "I've played a few times against Cardiff City, and it's never been an easy place to come to," he added. "It's always got a great atmosphere, so it will be a pleasure to be here playing for this club."
