An expert has revealed the simple rule that could help Brits avoid hundreds of pounds worth of unexpected airport fees.
Summer holiday season is in full swing, and Brits are already packing their bags and jetting off on their travels. However, with airline baggage rules stricter than ever until new luggage allowances come into effect in 2027, overpacking means unexpected fees can easily rack up.
Karishma Darji, storage expert at Ready Steady Store, has revealed one simple rule to follow this summer to avoid extra cost and extra stress.
What is the 70% rule?
Karishma said: "Essentially, this rule means only filling your suitcase to around 70% of its full capacity." This helps prevent overpacking, makes items easier to find, reduces stress, and leaves room for souvenirs.
She added: "Start by laying out everything you plan to take. Once you can see it all, it is much easier to decide what's essential and what can stay at home. Aim to put at least 30% back into your wardrobe by building a holiday capsule wardrobe."
How to achieve 70% capacity?
Karishma said: "Build a capsule wardrobe by choosing versatile items in similar colour palettes and use methods such as the 5-4-3-2-1 method, which includes packing five tops, four bottoms, three pairs of shoes, two layers, and one accessory."
She advised: "Avoid leaving packing to the last minute as this can often lead to panic overpacking, with travellers throwing in items they are unlikely to actually wear. Wear your bulkier items when you travel to avoid needing to pack them and use techniques like rolling clothes or compression packing cubes to help save space."
Karishma said: "It is a simple but effective method to avoid packing items you don't actually need. For added reassurance, purchase a luggage scale so you can check the weight of your bags before you travel. Whilst a small cost initially, this can help avoid unexpected larger costs at the airport."
