The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) is encouraging drivers to sign up for a free online account that can send vehicle tax reminders by text message or email before payments are due.
In a post on X, the DVLA said: "Do you know when your vehicle tax is due? With a Driver and vehicles account, you can choose to receive vehicle tax reminders by text or email! Make life a little easier, it only takes around 5 minutes."
How the account works
Once signed up, drivers can choose to receive digital reminders when their vehicle tax is due - although those who already pay by Direct Debit are not eligible because payments renew automatically.
The account also allows motorists to keep track of a range of other driving-related deadlines, including MOT expiry dates and photocard driving licence renewals.
Additional features
Drivers can also check their penalty points, view which vehicles they are entitled to drive, replace a lost or damaged licence, update their address, renew a licence for those aged 70 and over, and access details of medical driving licences.
The service is available to anyone with a driving licence issued in England, Scotland or Wales, or a vehicle log book (V5C) in their name.
Verification and reminders
New users may be asked to verify their identity using photo ID such as a passport or driving licence.
Motorists who pay their vehicle tax every six or 12 months can continue to receive the traditional V11 reminder letter by post, although they can opt out of paper reminders once they sign up for digital alerts.
Failing to tax a vehicle can result in enforcement action, with the DVLA able to issue penalties and take action against untaxed vehicles. Registering for reminders is intended to reduce the risk of drivers simply forgetting when their next payment is due.
