Tenerife Named Best Value Canary Island for Winter Sun Breaks
Tenerife Named Best Value Canary Island for Winter Sun

Tenerife has been named the best value Canary Island for a winter sun getaway, according to a study by Post Office Money. The island offers balmy weather with temperatures reaching 24C during the winter months, making it a popular choice for British holidaymakers.

The Post Office's 'winter sun costs barometer' assessed prices in popular holiday destinations across various criteria, including the cost of a cup of coffee, a three-course meal with house wine, a local beer, and additional food and beverage items. Out of all the Canaries, Tenerife came out on top.

Why Tenerife Stands Out

Tenerife's warm weather, bustling resorts, beachfront promenades and volcanic landscapes make it a hit with sun-seekers. The team behind the study explained: "Tenerife offers a good mix of sunshine, convenience and value. It's also one of the cheapest European destinations in this year's report."

While the report examined food and beverage expenses during holidays, it did not include the cost of flights or package deals required to get there. However, outside of school holiday periods such as November or early December, deals can be found.

Flights and Deals

According to Skyscanner, budget flights from Britain to Tenerife are available from £26 each way, excluding additional hand baggage. Operators including TUI, easyJet Holidays, Loveholidays and On the Beach all offer a range of last-minute deals catering to various budgets.

The flight time is roughly four hours from most British airports, making it an ideal spot for those who lack the annual leave for a full one or two-week holiday.

Global Rankings

Although Tenerife topped the Canary Islands in the rankings, Portugal's Algarve emerged as the leading European destination for the best value winter sun break overall, securing sixth place in the global rankings. Spain's Costa del Sol followed closely behind in seventh. The title of best value holiday destination overall went to South Africa's Cape Town, which boasted some of the lowest average prices, including local beer and three-course meals.
