Sainsbury's 59p Tomato Soup Beats Heinz in Which? Taste Test
Sainsbury's 59p Tomato Soup Beats Heinz in Taste Test (14.10.2026)

Sainsbury's Cream of Tomato soup, priced at just 59p for a 400g tin, has been named the best in a blind taste test by consumer experts at Which?, outperforming Heinz and other major brands.

The test involved 77 soup fans rating big brands including Heinz and Baxters alongside cheaper supermarket own labels. Three supermarket varieties stood out, all costing less than half the price of a comparable tin of Heinz.

Top Performers in the Blind Taste Test

Sainsbury's Cream of Tomato came in first place, with most tasters praising its perfect balance of 'tanginess and sweetness'. It also scored highly on appearance and texture. The tin costs 59p, compared with £1.70 for Heinz's equivalent.

Sainsbury's was tied first with Tesco's cream of tomato soup, which is also priced at 59p. Testers said it 'excelled on every measure,' boasting the perfect flavour and tang.

Asda's Cream of Tomato soup, also 59p, scored slightly lower but still impressed the panel with its appearance, aroma, flavour and texture, and the right amount of creaminess.

Brand Rankings and Lower Scorers

Crosse and Blackwell came next, marking the highest-rated brand in the test. At £1.25 for a tin, it is cheaper than Heinz but still more than double the price of most supermarket varieties that scored higher. M&S, Co-op and Morrisons also impressed the panel, though not as much as the others.

At the other end of the scale, Aldi and Lidl's varieties, both 59p, fell short in terms of texture and creaminess. Heinz itself was third from the bottom, with many saying the flavour was too weak and not sweet or creamy enough.

Waitrose was the bottom of all supermarket own-label soups, with the panel unimpressed by the flavour and creaminess. Baxters came in last place overall, the most expensive soup at £2.05, with most tasters saying the flavour wasn't strong enough and the soup wasn't thick enough.
