A resident in England has described a parking dispute with a neighbour that escalated when the neighbour blocked their driveway. The homeowner had parked in front of the neighbour's house after finding their usual spot occupied, prompting the neighbour to leave a note and later block the drive in 'protest'.
Parking row escalates
The resident, posting on Reddit, explained that they often park outside the neighbour's house when space is unavailable elsewhere, noting that the space is public and not a dropped curb. After a recent incident, the neighbour parked fully in front of their driveway, leading to a confrontation.
When the resident reported the blockage to the council, the neighbour allegedly claimed to work for the council and said they could get any fine cancelled. The neighbour was described as 'rude and aggressive' during the exchange.
Council fine and misconduct concerns
The resident questioned whether a council employee could avoid paying a fine due to their employment. Reddit users responded that such a claim could constitute gross misconduct, potentially leading to disciplinary action or dismissal. One user suggested making a code of conduct complaint against the neighbour.
Another user advised involving the police, stating that obstruction is an offence and not merely a civil parking matter. They emphasised that the police should not dismiss the issue as a council responsibility.
Police guidance on public parking
The Metropolitan Police has clarified that anyone is allowed to park in a space on a public road, even if it is directly outside a person's house. They acknowledged that this can be frustrating, especially when parking spaces are limited.
