A Tesco shopper has said she felt "ripped off" after unwrapping a festive chicken and bacon wrap from the supermarket's Finest meal deal, claiming the packaging was "misleading".
Elena Popescu, 34, from Sevenoaks, Kent, bought the wrap as part of a £5.50 Finest meal deal at a Tesco Express on October 30. The deal also included boiled eggs and a Starbucks coffee.
When she opened the packaging, she found the wrap had been split into two sections, with a gap in the middle where the sauce pot had been placed. The cardboard sleeve had hidden the gap, making the wrap appear larger than it was.
Shopper 'shocked' by portion size
Elena, a retail worker, said she was "completely shocked" to discover the wrap was divided into two parts. She said the portion was "not filling at all" and that she was "so disappointed".
"I feel like the Tesco packaging was misleading and I've been ripped off. For a premium meal deal, it tasted alright but it was a very small portion," she said.
She added: "The packaging was very nice and wrapped up but it was misleading. I honestly thought the dip was on top of my wrap but it was in the middle of it. It was a festive one as well; it's not really in the festive spirit to do this to their customers."
Wider reaction and advice
After Elena posted a video of the wrap on social media, it gained more than 180,000 views, with other users also saying the packaging was "misleading".
Reviews of the wrap on the Tesco website from previous years expressed similar concerns. One review said: "Bought in store. Looks like you're buying a 10-inch wrap with a dip - you're not. There are two three-inch wraps and in the middle of the packaging area, where the marketing stuff is, containing only the dip. It's not what you think it is."
Another reviewer praised the gravy mayonnaise but noted the wrap was "very small" compared with others in Tesco, to make room in the packaging for the dip pot.
Elena said she has not contacted Tesco to lodge a complaint but will be more cautious about her purchases in future. She is urging other shoppers to check the weight of Tesco wraps and sandwiches before buying them.
"I would recommend others to now check the weight of the product so they can check how filling it's going to be and what you're going to get," she said.
Tesco confirmed the wrap is identical in size to other wraps in its Finest range. The supermarket added that because the product is packaged with a dip pot, a gap will be visible between the two wrap halves once the dip has been removed. Customers unhappy with a product are urged to return it with their receipt for a full refund or replacement.
