Internet slang is increasingly shaping how people celebrate loved ones, according to new data from Moonpig. The online greeting card brand analysed millions of personalised card messages and found that use of 'mogging' has surged by 455% this year, making it the fastest-growing expression tracked.
Slang trends in card messages
'Mogging', which means outshining, outperforming or upstaging someone or something, has been named word of the year by the Collins English Dictionary. Other terms are also gaining ground: mentions of '6-7' have risen 164%, while 'aura' has increased by a more modest 8%.
In contrast, several slang favourites that peaked in 2025 have declined sharply. Use of 'sigma' is down 62%, 'skibidi' has fallen 59%, and 'rizz' has dropped 41%. 'Slay' has also decreased by 30%.
Pookie shows staying power
Despite the rise of newer expressions, 'pookie' remains the most-used term tracked, appearing in more than 17,000 cards so far this year, demonstrating its lasting appeal among card senders.
