Millions of Britons waiting for Mastercard payouts have received a major update. At least £100 million will be distributed equally among those who claim, with individual payments expected to be between £45 and £70.
Legal Victory and Eligibility
Around 47 million people may receive compensation after a legal win last year, even those who have never used Mastercard. Former financial ombudsman Walter Merricks first launched the claim in 2016, alleging that shoppers were wrongly charged fees on transactions between 1992 and 2008.
Consumers have faced delays due to legal challenges, but Merricks shared this week that legal claims have been dropped, and the process will start by the end of this year. The exact amount will be revealed early next year.
Who Can Claim and How
Most people over 34 who shopped in supermarkets between May 1992 and June 2008 will be eligible, regardless of whether they had a Mastercard. The claims process will launch in the coming months, with six months to register.
Payments will be made at the end of the six-month period, falling in the first half of 2027. Recipients can choose bank transfer, gift voucher, or donate to charity.
