Energy customers have been informed that 24 suppliers have joined a scheme set to deliver a £150 boost directly into the accounts of millions of households. However, people must act before 23 August or risk missing out entirely.
Eligibility and automatic payments
Approximately six million households will receive the rebate this winter, including around 250,000 in Scotland who will benefit automatically for the first time. However, the Andy Burnham government has urged eligible households to ensure the billpayer's name appears on their energy bill in order to receive the Warm Home Discount automatically.
Every household where the billpayer is in receipt of means-tested benefits is entitled to the rebate. In England and Wales, households claiming Housing Benefit, Income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Pension Credit and Universal Credit will qualify — the same group as last winter.
VAT cut and supplier list
This comes on the back of swift action by the Prime Minister to scrap VAT on domestic electricity bills from 1 October, one of his earliest decisions upon taking office, cutting £45 from the annual Ofgem price cap. The government stated the reminder follows this immediate move to remove VAT from electricity bills from 1 October, offering households some much-needed breathing space on the cost-of-living.

Government urging and future plans
Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh said: "Families will be worried about their energy bills this winter and our focus is on giving them breathing space, as we continue to work to bring down bills. Almost a million more families with children received the £150 Warm Home Discount last winter, after we expanded scheme."
"If you know someone who might benefit, please start spreading the word and encourage them to check they are named on their energy bill."
The Government is urging eligible households to confirm they are named on their electricity bill, with suppliers set to rely on customers' records as of Sunday 23 August. Those who have recently moved home may find they are not listed on their electricity bill. Eligible customers using pre-payment meters with a key or card to top up will also need to verify that their household account is registered in their name.
Earlier this year, the Government confirmed that millions of eligible households will continue to receive the Warm Home Discount for the remainder of the decade, with the scheme running through to 2030/1. Last year's Budget removed an average of £150 from energy bills, a saving that is factored into future bills. The Government stated that the Warm Homes Plan will additionally cut energy consumption, reduce bills for millions of households and assist in lifting families out of fuel poverty.
