Consumer experts at Which? have named Aldi the UK's cheapest supermarket for 2026, following 11 consecutive monthly wins. The annual analysis found that a basket of 87 items at Aldi costs £154.34 on average, £61 less than at Waitrose, the UK's most expensive supermarket.
How the ranking was calculated
Which? compared thousands of prices across eight major UK supermarkets: Aldi, Asda, Lidl, Morrisons, Ocado, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Waitrose. The data is supplied by an independent price comparison company, and for stores without online prices, fieldworkers are sent out to gather prices in person.
The analysis includes special offers and loyalty prices where applicable, but excludes multi-buy deals. It also does not factor in the value of points, personalised discounts or other rewards, as these vary between customers.
Supermarkets ranked from cheapest to most expensive
- Aldi - £154.34
- Lidl (with Lidl Plus) - £157.17
- Lidl - £157.21
- Tesco (with Clubcard) - £181.77
- Sainsbury's (with Nectar) - £182.90
- Asda - £183.47
- Morrisons - £186.77
- Tesco - £187.31
- Sainsbury's - £191.56
- Ocado - £202.33
- Waitrose - £215.87
Lidl came in second, just under £3 more expensive than Aldi. The analysis also found that loyalty membership can significantly reduce the cost of a weekly shop, particularly at Tesco and Sainsbury's.
Aldi's response
Julie Ashfield, Chief Commercial Officer at Aldi UK, said: "Families shouldn't have to make sacrifices to the activities, treats, or hobbies they enjoy just because everyday household budgets are under pressure. The latest Which? data clearly demonstrates that shoppers can make substantial, ongoing savings simply by changing where they do their weekly shop."
She added: "As the price gap between Aldi and traditional supermarkets continues to grow, that's extra cash staying directly in customers' pockets for days out, family treats, or saving towards Christmas. Shoppers don't need to change their lifestyle to save money – they just need to change their supermarket."
Aldi retained its title after being named the cheapest supermarket for 10 of the 12 months last year, according to the consumer group's analysis.
