Aldi was the cheapest supermarket in October 2026, with an 87-item shopping basket averaging £154.34, according to the latest monthly price comparison by consumer group Which?.
The comparison analysed thousands of products across eight of the UK's biggest supermarkets, covering 87 everyday items including food, drink and household essentials. The retailers included Aldi, Asda, Lidl, Morrisons, Ocado, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Waitrose.
Lidl and Tesco Follow in Rankings
Lidl came second, with its Lidl Plus loyalty prices bringing the average bill to £157.17. Shoppers without a Lidl Plus account paid almost exactly the same, at £157.21.
Tesco followed, with its Clubcard prices proving cheaper than Sainsbury's Nectar offers. The average shop at Tesco cost £181.77 using Clubcard discounts, compared with £182.90 at Sainsbury's using Nectar prices.
Asda, Morrisons and Premium Chains
Asda was slightly more expensive, with the average basket costing £183.47, while Morrisons shoppers faced an average bill of £186.77. However, shoppers who did not use loyalty schemes faced higher prices at Tesco and Sainsbury's. Without Clubcard discounts, the Tesco shopping list cost £187.31, while the same basket at Sainsbury's came to £191.56 without Nectar prices.
Waitrose was the most expensive supermarket in the comparison, with the 87 products costing an average of £215.87. Ocado was the second most expensive, at £202.33.
Loyalty Scheme Impact and 2025 Trends
The figures also highlight the difference loyalty schemes can make. In October, 18 products included in the comparison had Clubcard discounts at Tesco, while 21 products had Nectar offers at Sainsbury's. Lidl had just one product on a loyalty discount during the analysis. This means shoppers could find themselves paying more for the same groceries if they do not take advantage of the available discounts.
However, the figures show that even with loyalty prices included, Aldi and Lidl remained considerably cheaper than the larger supermarket chains.
This compares to supermarket prices in 2025, when thousands of grocery prices were checked every day. Aldi was crowned the cheapest supermarket for 10 out of the 12 months, making it the overall winner for the year. A 70-item shopping basket cost an average of £120.46 at the German discount supermarket over the month. Lidl took the top spot twice, in July and October. Across the year, its average monthly shopping bill was just 77p more expensive than Aldi's. Waitrose, meanwhile, was the most expensive supermarket for the comparison shopping list in every month of 2025.
