People aged 60 and over can access a range of discounts and freebies even before reaching the state pension age, according to Money Magpie expert Vicky Parry. The state pension age is rising from 66 to 67 and could increase to 68 earlier than planned.
Free bus pass
The free bus pass scheme varies across the UK. In Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, people can apply at 60. In England, applicants must reach state pension age, except in London where the age is 60. The pass now offers off-peak travel only (9am to 11pm weekdays and all day weekends) in most areas, though disabled person's passes still allow anytime travel.
Coach discounts
Over 60s in England and Wales can buy a Senior Coachcard for £15 (plus £3 postage) for a third off National Express fares. Additional deals include £15 return fares on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays when booked three days in advance, and 15% off adult Fully Flexible fares.
Train discounts
A Senior Railcard costs £35 for one year or £80 for three years, offering savings on many First Class, Standard, Advance and off-peak tickets, excluding morning peak travel in London and the South East. The card can be purchased online, at staffed ticket offices or by calling 0345 3000 250.
Tube travel Oyster card
The 60+ London Oyster Photocard provides free travel on TfL services from 9am weekdays and anytime at weekends and bank holidays for those over 60.
Food discounts
Many restaurants and cafes offer early dinner discounts for over 60s. Dobbies Garden Centres provide a main meal and cake for £12 Monday to Friday, 12pm-3pm. Iceland and The Food Warehouse offer 10% off every Tuesday with no minimum spend for those aged 60 and over.
Theatre and cinema discounts
Local cinemas and theatres offer concessionary rates for over 60s. ODEON Silver Screen tickets cost £2 and include free tea, coffee and biscuits. The National Theatre offers £20 off midweek matinees for over 60s. The Royal Shakespeare Company gives 20% discount for over 65s on Monday and Tuesday evening performances and all midweek matinees.
Specsavers and Boots
Over 60s buying glasses from Specsavers for £70 or more get 20% off frames, lenses and extra options. Boots runs an Over 60s rewards programme with double Advantage Card points, prize draws and extra points at Boots Hearingcare.
