A pest control expert has shared a simple 60-second check that could prevent rats from entering your home. Triumph Pest Control, which posts advice on TikTok, says inspecting a few key areas around your property can stop an infestation before it starts.
The first step is to walk around your home and look for any breaks near vents. Cracks around gas and electric meters are also a common entry point, as rats will exploit even small gaps to get inside. The expert explained: "They'll go up the pipe and into the actual structure of the gas and electric meter and get into the property that way."
Checking sewer drains is equally important. Lift any drain covers and look for breaks or gaps at the back of your property. Old pipes that have been removed but left with unfilled holes are another favourite route for rodents. Finally, secure any bird feeders or stored food in metal containers with tight lids to deter rats from chewing through.
If you suspect a rat problem, the first step is to confirm it is rats. Then remove outdoor food sources such as bird feeders and clear away shelter like rubbish piles or stacked timber. Seal any cracks or gaps you find around your home and keep the surrounding area clean. Shop-bought repellents can help, but if the problem persists, contact a professional pest control service.
