Kinahan Cartel Senior Lieutenant Jailed for 24 Years for Murder and Attempted Murder
Kinahan Cartel Senior Lieutenant Jailed for 24 Years

A senior lieutenant in one of Ireland's most violent gangs has been sentenced to 24 years in prison. Sean McGovern, 40, pleaded guilty to two charges of directing the activities of a criminal organisation in connection with the Hutch-Kinahan gangland feud.

Murder of Noel 'Duck Egg' Kirwan

McGovern, known as 'Knife', oversaw the murder of Noel 'Duck Egg' Kirwan in December 2016. The innocent grandfather was shot outside his home after returning from a meal with his partner's family. Encrypted messages revealed that McGovern and a senior associate had been plotting to target Kirwan since September 2016, tasking a gunman called 'Teeth' with the murder. Detective Sergeant Daly stated: 'Within seconds of parking, at least seven shots were fired through the driver's window, hitting Noel Kirwan on five occasions.'

Attempted Murder of James 'Mago' Gately

McGovern also directed the attempted murder of James 'Mago' Gately in May 2017. Referring to Gately as a 'weasel', McGovern said: 'All weasels get caught out in the end.' Gately was shot at five times at a Dublin petrol station but survived. The gunman, Caolan Smyth, is already in prison for the attack.

During a sentencing hearing last month, McGovern apologised for the hurt caused by his actions. Mr Justice Patrick McGrath described the Kinahan gang as a 'particularly large, well-organised, sinister and dangerous organisation'. He noted that McGovern was a senior member and 'confidant of those in the higher echelons', who placed a 'high degree of trust and competence' in him. The judge called Kirwan's murder 'cruel and callous' and said McGovern knew he was directing preparations for murder and did so intentionally.

McGovern was arrested in Dubai in October 2024 and extradited to Ireland in May 2025. At the Special Criminal Court in Dublin, a three-judge panel sentenced him to 14 years for Kirwan's murder and 10 years for the attempted murder of Gately, to run consecutively and backdated to his arrest.

Kinahan Cartel Background

The Kinahan Cartel, allegedly headed by Daniel Kinahan, is involved in cocaine and heroin trafficking and linked to at least 20 murders across Europe. The gang has an ongoing feud with the Hutch Gang. Kinahan was also arrested in Dubai in April 2026 after a warrant was issued for his arrest. Irish police said his arrest 'is another extremely important demonstration of the need for international law enforcement co-operation in tackling transnational organised crime.'
