DWP Child Benefit warning as August bank holiday dates change

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued a warning to anyone expecting a benefit payment this week, confirming that payments due on the August bank holiday will be brought forward.

Monday, August 31 is a bank holiday, meaning all payments scheduled for that date will be paid early on Friday, August 28. The change affects all major benefits, including Universal Credit, State Pension, Personal Independence Payment, Attendance Allowance, Carer’s Allowance, and Disability Living Allowance.

DWP confirms early payment date

In a social media post, the DWP said: "This year benefit payments will be paid earlier. Payments expected on the 31st this month will be brought forward to August 28."

The government added: "This will provide financial certainty for families as they prepare for the new school year, allowing parents and carers to plan their spending with confidence, particularly at a time when the cost of living is high."

Minister welcomes change

Minister for social security and disability Sir Stephen Timms said: "We’re pleased to confirm that benefit payments due on the August bank holiday will be paid earlier. This will help ensure families and older people receive their money without disruption over the bank holiday period."

He added: "This Government is determined to ensure people up and down the country have the support and breathing room they need, which is why we’ve acted to take money off energy bills, increase the National Minimum Wage and lift half a million children out of poverty, as well as supporting people into good, secure jobs."

What to do if payment is late

Recipients are advised to keep an eye on DWP updates around bank holidays to avoid missing important information about payment dates. If a payment does not arrive, the DWP advises contacting your bank before calling the Child Benefit Office.

The next bank holiday after August 31 is Christmas Day on Friday, December 25, followed by Boxing Day on Saturday, December 26, with a substitute bank holiday scheduled for Monday, December 28.
