UK Care Home Lillibet House Enters Liquidation After Inadequate CQC Rating
Care Home Liquidation After Inadequate CQC Rating

Lillibet House, a care home in Bedfordshire providing personal and nursing care for up to 30 residents with dementia, mental health needs, or physical disabilities, has entered liquidation after being rated inadequate by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

CQC Inspection Findings

The CQC conducted an inspection in July and August last year, following up on safety concerns from a previous visit. The inspection found that care was not always safe or suited to residents' needs due to a lack of staff training and support. Leaders had not trained all staff to care for people with dementia, limited mental capacity, or other health conditions. Staff did not always respect the consent of residents with limited mental capacity when refusing personal care, which could violate their human rights.

Liquidation Process

Natalie Hughes of Simply Corporate Limited was appointed liquidator by creditors on June 25. According to Companies House, the care setting was incorporated in March 2023. At the time of inspection, the home housed 27 residents.

Regulatory Concerns

Stuart Dunn, CQC deputy director of operations in the East of England, stated: "When we inspected Lillibet House, we were concerned to find people’s care wasn’t always safe or suited to their needs, because leaders hadn’t given their staff the training and support they needed." He added that staff were not trained in safeguarding from abuse or neglect, and leaders had not investigated safety incidents or reported them to the local authority and CQC, missing opportunities to learn from mistakes. Staff also lacked skills to respond to residents who were upset or anxious, though most residents and relatives expressed satisfaction with care, and most residents appeared relaxed during support.

Next Steps

The CQC shared their findings with the home's management and will monitor closely to ensure changes are made and residents remain safe. Further regulatory action has been initiated, which Lillibet House Ltd has the right to appeal.
