Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has insisted that Julian Alvarez is not for sale, despite the Argentine striker publicly stating his desire to leave the club this summer. Both Arsenal and Barcelona are monitoring the situation closely.
Alvarez's Transfer Declaration
Julian Alvarez, who joined Atletico from Manchester City for £81.5 million in 2024, recently told ESPN: "Honestly, I don't know. I don't think it's the right time to talk about this, but I can't hide or pretend otherwise either. I try to be an honest person. I spoke with the people at the club I needed to speak with. The best thing for everyone is a transfer. I want to fulfil my dream."
The 26-year-old has been a key player for Atletico, scoring 49 goals and providing 17 assists in 106 appearances over two seasons. However, the club finished behind Barcelona in La Liga last term and lost the Copa del Rey final, fueling speculation about Alvarez's future.
Atletico's Firm Stance
Cerezo told Spanish radio station RNE: "It caught us by surprise and we have done what we had to do. We've said that he is an Atletico de Madrid player and that we have no offers from anyone. Even if there were offers, we do not want to sell him."
Atletico are in a strong negotiating position, with Alvarez under contract until 2030 and a release clause set at €500 million (£431 million).
Interest from Arsenal and Barcelona
Arsenal, who faced Alvarez in the Champions League semi-finals, are seeking a prolific striker. Barcelona, having seen Robert Lewandowski leave, need a replacement and admire Alvarez's La Liga performances. Atletico manager Diego Simeone previously commented: "I'm not in Julian's head. I understand that it's normal that an extraordinary player like Julian Alvarez is wanted by Arsenal, PSG, Barcelona. It's normal because he's so good."
Despite the player's desire to move, Atletico remain resolute that he will not be sold this summer.
