A yellow weather warning has been issued for parts of Scotland as heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to sweep across the country this afternoon, August 19.

The Met Office warning covers parts of central and eastern Scotland, with forecasters warning that slow moving downpours could bring flooding, lightning and hail.

The warning is in place from 2pm today (August 19) until 9pm, with some areas expected to see particularly heavy rainfall over a short period.

Met Office Warning Details

The Met Office said: "Heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop over the area this afternoon. These showers will be slow moving bringing accumulations of 15-20mm in an hour in some places, with 30mm possible in a few hours. Lightning and hail will be additional hazards. The showers will ease during the evening."

At the moment, the warning affects parts of Central, Tayside and Fife, as well as Grampian. However, it is important to keep up to date with the Met Office in case anything changes, or the warning extends.

Travel Disruption and Flooding Risks

The weather could also cause disruption for people travelling, with standing water, spray and hail potentially making driving conditions more difficult.

There are also concerns that some homes and businesses could be affected by flooding, while lightning strikes could cause damage to buildings and structures in a small number of locations.

Drivers are being urged to check road conditions before setting off, to ensure they take the safest route possible. Meanwhile those using public transport should check bus and train timetables as delays are expected.

Preparations and Safety Advice

The Met Office also advises those in the affected areas to prepare in advance in case of flash flooding. They recommend putting together an emergency flood kit, as well as having all your devices charged in case of power outages.

In case there is power outages, make sure to have a torch near by and batteries to ensure you have some light.

Due to risk of thunderstorms, the forecasters also advise finding a safe enclosed shelter, such as a car and avoiding trees or structures which could be struck by lightning.

The Met Office has also advised people to keep checking the latest forecast as weather warnings can change quickly.
